Contact the Affordable Homes Act Conference Committee with RAC-MA

Background

The Affordable Homes Act is the largest housing investment of its kind in Massachusetts history, designed to meet the moment and meaningfully impact the supply of housing in the state. The House and Senate have passed their respective versions of the legislation, and it now goes to a conference committee which will work out the differences between the two chambers. Join RAC-MA in asking the conference committee to ensure the final Affordable Homes Act is as strong as possible. Specifically, we are asking that they protect the following components which appear in either the House or Senate version of the legislation (but not both):
  1. The highest possible capital authorizations across all programs
  2. Inclusionary zoning by simple majority
  3. Eviction record sealing
The Conference Committee includes the following legislators:
Senator Lydia Edwards (Third Suffolk)
Senator William Brownsberger (Suffolk and Middlesex)
Senator Peter Durant (Worcester and Hampshire)
Representative James Arciero (2nd Middlesex)
Representative Aaron Michlewitz (3rd Suffolk)
Representative David DeCoste (5th Plymouth)

Honorable members of the Affordable Homes Act conference committee --

My name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. I am also a member of [your congregation] which is a part of the Religious Action Center of Massachusetts, a group of 39 Reform synagogues (approximately 14,000 households) across the commonwealth. I am writing to urge you to finalize the strongest possible Affordable Homes Act (H.4726) without delay.

[optional personal story -- why is housing justice important to you]

Our Reform Jewish community has long advocated for children, the poor, the elderly, the sick, the disabled, and the "stranger among us." Our prophets have taught: God commands us to "share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless into your house" (Isaiah 58:7). If our prophets and sages lived today, surely, they would be crying out against a nation that allows children to go hungry and families to sleep on the streets. Surely, they would cry out against a society that neglects healing the sick, clothing the naked, and feeding the poor as priorities.

During this pivotal moment, I would ask that [legislator’s name] specifically prioritize including the highest possible capital authorizations across all programs, inclusionary zoning by simple majority, and eviction record sealing in the final version of the Affordable Homes Act.

Thank you for your time and attention, and for your support in making the Affordable Homes Act (H.4726) as bold and impactful as possible!

Sincerely,

[Your name]
