Parenting Series: Supporting our Young People!

January 10th at 9:30am EST – Sports Parenting 101

Children who play sports are faced with so much stress and anxiety – and not just from opponents, coaches, and the sport itself. Often times it is the adults – the parents of the athlete – who add to the obstacles and pressures. In this class, Danny will share wisdom from parenting experts, professional coaches, and educators about the best way to support and encourage your child during their athletic journey. Learn the “6 Most Important Words to Say” to your child before competition, and the exact terminology to use during and after the game /match.

January 17th at 9:30am EST – Being the Grown Ups Creative Kids Need: Thoughts About Support As Young People Explore Their Passions

A parent, artist and educator, Jo-Ellen will share thoughts about supporting young people as they explore their passions. Let’s chat about boundaries, power struggles, empathetic communication and some important things your creative kid needs to hear from you (and some things they don’t). Bring a post-it note, your favorite color crayon (ok, a pen or pencil will work but how often do grown-ups get to use crayons?), an open heart and mind.

January 24th at 9:30am EST – Guide to Video Games & Violence

Ever wonder what the psychological and behavioral effects of violence in video games are? Ever feel frustrated, disturbed, or disappointed by what you see on your child’s screen? Feel a little in over your head whenever you try to chat about controllers and consoles? Let’s talk about it! Join Jayme Dale Mallindine, Games Studies Scholar and Director of URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy East as we explore together what violence in video games and Judaism have to say to one another.  At the end of this session, you’ll leave with data and statistics, a greater understanding of gaming culture and terminology, and some conversational tools to help you empower your child to make values-based decisions about the type of gamer they want to be. Just like a video game, this session is heavily interactive, so be prepared to press buttons, make choices, and chat!

January 31st at 9:30am EST – Surviving & Thriving in this Challenging Time

Join Cori Miller and Lori Zlotoff, clinical social workers and members of the year round Harlam team, to learn strategies and have your questions answered about how to best support yourselves and your children through the continued uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. The session will include tips and tricks used at camp that have relevance outside of camps gates and will guide you through difficult, yet powerful conversations with your children as you support them through challenging times and help them build resilience.
